Culture Change is in the Air at Westminster Village North

In the senior healthcare industry, “Culture Change,” “Person-Centered Care” and “Resident Directed Living” are buzzwords for the movement to allow those who require extra care – assisted living, rehabilitation or long-term care – more control in their own lives.

But they’re more than buzzwords at Westminster Village North.

We’re in the midst of a major construction and renovation project driven by our determination that everyone living on our campus will experience all the benefits of Resident Directed Living (RDL).

Working with The InterDesign Group, a senior care architectural firm, and with Turner Construction Company, we’re building on the on-going expansion, renovation and restoration program that has seen 50 new attached cottages; a three-story building that added 93 apartment homes for active, independent seniors; extensive renovations and new apartments in our historic assisted living building, and a new, state-of-the-art therapy center in the past six years.

Now we’re taking on the health center with two additions totaling 35,216 square feet. The first addition is a 22,804 square foot rehabilitation center featuring new dining and activity spaces as well as 30 rooms designed for maximum resident comfort and privacy. Each roomy suite is private with a private bath and shower room, and each offers built-in cabinetry that creates cozy and comfortable spaces for visiting, reading. using your computer or relaxing with a good book.

Another 12,412 square feet addition serves mid- to late-stage dementia residents. That building comprises 13 new rooms, and new activity and dining spaces.

Among the amenities being added to the health center are two new kitchens for more flexible dining options, and a new café that will serve both residents and staff with extended hours. Advanced technologies will be incorporated throughout, including complimentary wi-fi access and new nurse call systems.

Entry to the new health center will be through an expansive new lobby that provides both resident activity space and spaces where families and friends can share time with loved ones. A windowed walkway and loggia tie the new rehab unit to the existing rehab spaces.

Westminster Village North is known for its beautifully landscaped gardens and courtyards, and these additions will of course include outdoor space for each building. Our Mary Newill Therapy Center features a garden visible and accessible from both the activities lounge and out state-of-the-art rehabilitation center. For the memory care addition, a new courtyard offers secure access for a worry-free outdoor experience.

The new additions are slated to open in summer 2013, but our dedication to RDL will continue as we immediately begin up-dating our existing health center rooms to the same standards. As part of that effort, a courtyard outside our Mary Newill Therapy Center will be re-designed as extension of the center for outdoor rehab work whenever weather permits.
